I once had a conversation with a mom who knew she wanted to homeschool her kids but was deathly afraid of ruining them. She was afraid she was not qualified to teach them. She was afraid she didn’t know enough. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here’s the interesting thing about this mom. She had been a high school teacher in a public school before she had kids and decided to stay home! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Now she was worried about how to teach the alphabet to her kindergartener! I learned a very important lesson that day. The fear that most parents experience at the thought of teaching their own kids is not necessarily because they don’t have the degree that says they can teach, it’s because the outcome is personal to them and therefore, very important. But the truth is, you\u00b4ve been here before. When you found out you were having a baby, when you took them home from the hospital, when they started teething and you didn’t know what was wrong, and don’t get me started on when they got their driving permit. Raising kids is hard. And yes, the stakes are high. But they always were. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
You may not have the training a certified teacher has, but you have something much more important to the education of your child. You have skin in the game. I would say most teachers get into the profession because they want to make a difference in the lives of their students. Even so, it cannot compare to the love and investment a parent makes on their child. Your child’s teacher has them for one year. You have them for a lifetime. No comparison. It’s true you do not get paid to be a teacher. This is better. You\u00b4re a parent. You care more about your child’s education probably even than your child. That is a heck of an incentive to do whatever you need to do to make sure they get what they need. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ever since you brought that baby home from the hospital you have been a teacher. You just got used to delegating academics to someone who has been trained in those subjects. In the following chapters I will address some ways you can combat the areas you get stuck in. For now, I\u00b4d like to help you deprogram yourself from the belief that you are not a teacher. You are. Who taught your child to eat at the table, or brush their teeth, or say thank you, or look both ways before crossing the street? Who taught your child to take a shower or make their bed? Or potty train? You! You are their primary teacher. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
We all have an idea of what a teacher should be. We picture someone at the front of the room in front of a whiteboard (or chalkboard), with <\/p>\n\n\n\n
a desk full of papers to grade, pens and pencils, planners, and an occasional apple from a student (do they still do that?) So if you are going to believe you are a teacher, you\u00b4re going to have to change your idea of what a teacher is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A teacher is someone who teaches. Someone who teaches is someone who facilitates learning. That’s it. The traditional teacher is <\/p>\n\n\n\n
in front because she\/he has 30 students. In order for them all to see the teacher, she\/he stands in front. Same thing with the whiteboard. Kids are at desks to create order. They are in a classroom to distinguish what grade they\u00b4re in…and to keep order. The students are in the school for six hours or so to accommodate such things as going to the bathroom, interruptions, lunch, getting in line, etc. In reality, if there is only one kid per grade, they should take half the time to do the same amount of work (though interruptions happen everywhere). For example, if there is a spelling bee, the teacher has to go through thirty kids before your kid gets a turn again. But if you are giving your child a spelling bee, it’s only them. They get a turn every time! That spelling bee is going to be quick. Not to mention that they will have to spell every word instead of 1\/30 of the words. Multiply that per subject and you can see how homeschooling can be more efficient. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Think of yourself more as a facilitator of learning than a traditional teacher and set your expectations accordingly. Different ages and grade levels will require different degrees of your time and interaction, but you are still facilitating learning. There are different ways to delegate the things you don’t feel equipped to teach, but there are more that you can teach than you think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Esto es lo interesante acerca de esa mam\u00e1 !Ella hab\u00eda sido maestra de preparatoria en una escuela p\u00fablica antes de tener hijos y decidi\u00f3 quedarse en casa!. Ahora le preocupa ense\u00f1arle el abecedario a su hijo de Kindergarten. Aprend\u00ed una lecci\u00f3n importante ese mismo d\u00eda. El miedo que la mayor\u00eda de los padres experimentan al pensar en ense\u00f1ar a sus propios hijos no es necesariamente porque no tienen el t\u00edtulo que dice que pueden ense\u00f1ar. Es porque el resultado es personal para ellos, por lo tanto, muy importante. Pero la verdad es que Ud ya ha experimentado esto antes. Cuando descubri\u00f3 que estaba embarazada, cuando llev\u00f3 a su beb\u00e9 del hospital a casa, cuando comenzaron a salirle los dientes y Usted no sab\u00eda porque su beb\u00e9 estaba llorando todo el tiempo, y el ense\u00f1arle a conducir, \u00a1ni se diga! Criar a los ni\u00f1os es dif\u00edcil y si hay mucho en juego, pero siempre lo fue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Es posible que Ud. no tenga la capacitaci\u00f3n de un maestro certificado, pero Usted tiene algo mucho m\u00e1s importante para la educaci\u00f3n de su hijo. El amor por \u00e9l o ella. Yo dir\u00eda que la mayor\u00eda de los maestros se dedican a la profesi\u00f3n porque quieren marcar una diferencia en la vida de sus estudiantes. Aun as\u00ed no se puede comparar con el amor y la inversi\u00f3n que un padre hace en su hijo. El maestro de su hijo lo tiene por un a\u00f1o. Usted lo tiene por toda la vida. No hay comparaci\u00f3n. Es cierto que no le pagan a Usted. como maestro. Pero esto es mejor. Es Usted un padre\/una madre que se preocupa por la educaci\u00f3n de sus hijos a\u00fan m\u00e1s que sus propios hijos. Es un gran incentivo para hacer lo que sea necesario para asegurarse que obtengan lo que necesitan. Desde que trajo a su hijo del hospital a casa, usted comenz\u00f3 a ser un maestro. Claro que usted. Usted es el primer maestro o maestra de su hijo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Todos tenemos una idea de lo que una maestra debe ser. Nos imaginamos a alguien que est\u00e1 enfrente del sal\u00f3n con una pizarra detr\u00e1s, un escritorio lleno de papeles que tiene que revisar, colores, l\u00e1pices, folders, y de vez en cuando una manzana (acaso todav\u00eda le llevan una manzana los estudiantes a las maestras?) As\u00ed que si usted va ser capaz de creer que puede ser maestra o maestro , va tener que empezar por cambiar su idea de lo que es un maestro. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Una maestra es alguien quien ense\u00f1a. Alguien que ense\u00f1a es alguien que facilita la ense\u00f1anza. All\u00ed est\u00e1. La maestra tradicional que est\u00e1 enfrente del sal\u00f3n tiene que estar all\u00ed para que la vean sus 30 estudiantes. Lo mismo con la pizarra. Los ni\u00f1os est\u00e1n sentados en sus pupitres para crear orden. Est\u00e1n en un sal\u00f3n porque est\u00e1n separados <\/p>\n\n\n\n
por grado…y para mantener el orden. Los estudiantes est\u00e1n en la escuela unas seis <\/p>\n\n\n\n
horas para dar lugar a las cosas que toman tiempo. Como ir al ba\u00f1o, interrupciones (aunque las interrupciones ocurren dondequiera). Por ejemplo, vamos a decir que hay un examen oral de deletrear. En una escuela, los 30 ni\u00f1os se ponen contra la pared y a cada uno le toca una palabra. De aqu\u00ed a que repasen todas las palabras se van a llevar mucho tiempo hasta que le vuelva a tocar a su hija o hijo . Pero si es solo un estudiante, va a hacer m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido. Y le tocan las 30 palabras en vez de una por cada treinta. Multiplique ese ejemplo por todas las materias pronto puede ver como homeschooling puede ser m\u00e1s eficiente. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Consid\u00e9rese un facilitador del aprendizaje en vez de un maestro y cambie sus expectativas en esa direcci\u00f3n. Diferentes edades y diferentes grados van a requerir diferentes cantidades de tiempo e interacci\u00f3n, pero usted sigue facilitando el aprendizaje.
