If you have kids, did you know you are a homeschool parent?

I once had a conversation with a mom who wanted to homeschool her kids but was deathly afraid of ruining them. She was afraid she was not qualified to teach them. She was afraid she didn’t know enough.

Shockingly, she had been a high school teacher in a public school before she had kids! Now she was worried about how to teach the alphabet to her kindergartener! I learned a very important lesson that day. The fear that most parents experience at the thought of teaching their own kids is not necessarily because they don’t have the degree that says they can teach, it’s because the outcome is personal to them and therefore, very important. But the truth is, you ́ve been homeschooling all along.

You may not have the training a certified teacher has, but you have something much more important to the education of your child. You have skin in the game. You care more about your child’s education even than your child! That is a heck of an incentive to do whatever you need to do to make sure they get what they need.

Ever since you brought your baby home from the hospital you have been a teacher. A teacher is someone who teaches. Someone who teaches is someone who facilitates learning. Think of yourself more as a facilitator of learning than a traditional teacher and realize that as a parent, you have been homeschooling all along. So you might as well be intentional about it.
