It feels like a life long journey to get to the point when you don’t feel like you have to impress anyone. I think we would all like to think we don’t care about what others think. And I certainly care less now than I used to. Still, there are glimpses that if you touch just the right nerve, I can see it’s still there. But I’ve seen what it looks like to not need to impress anyone and I am so on board with becoming more of that person.
In The Art of Spending Money by Morgan Housel, he asks the question, “If you and your family were on an island and no one else was there, if no one was coming over and there was no one to compete with or to impress, what would your furniture look like? What would your home be like? How about your clothes? What would you wear?”
What great questions. For the last few years I’ve been evaluating why I do what I do. Who I really want to be. What pressures do I feel and why. And I’ve concluded that who I want to be is someone who lives out the best person they can be. Not because someone else wants me to, but because I really don’t have to impress anyone. I just have to live MY best life. In doing so, I will, most likely, attract people who just want to live their best life too.
