I once heard someone say that our discontent lives in the space between expectation and reality. Absolutely! Whether it’s marriage, parenting, friendships, work or anything else we expected to go better than it did—disappointment shows up when we face that gap. So what do we do with it? Here are some thoughts.
Evaluate your expectations.
Not all expectations are wrong—but not all are realistic either. Some were never spoken out loud. Others were shaped by what we saw growing up, social media, or what we hoped would happen. Take a moment to ask: Is this expectation fair? Was it communicated? Is it rooted in truth or assumption? Clarity here brings a lot of freedom.
Evaluate your results.
This part requires humility. What has actually been happening—not what we wish was happening. Where are things working, even a little? Where are they not? And what part have I played in the outcome? This isn’t about blame—it’s about ownership. When we take responsibility for our part, we gain the power to make changes.
Evaluate your options.
Once we see things clearly, we’re not stuck—we have choices. We can adjust our expectations, have honest conversations, set boundaries, extend grace, or take intentional steps toward growth. Sometimes the healthiest move is not demanding more from others, but choosing to respond differently ourselves.
Disappointment doesn’t have to define your story. It can actually be an invitation—to grow, to communicate better, and to love more intentionally. We talk about topics like this often—on our podcast and in our weekly content. If you’re not already connected with us, make sure you are. Our heart is to equip and encourage you in every season.
