Some thoughts on Family Nights

When our children were young, Fridays were dedicated to family nights. However, as they grew older and their schedules filled with sports and extracurricular activities, flexibility became essential. Amidst the chaos of daily routines, family time often felt like a chore rather than a joy. Our days blurred together, leaving little room for fun unless we intentionally made space for it.

We also discovered that family nights didn’t need to break the bank. Whether it was a movie at home or a walk in the park, we embraced the philosophy of “making do.” By scheduling these evenings into our week, we found the opportunity to get creative without waiting for the perfect moment.

Crucially, family night wasn’t a time for lectures or reprimands. Despite the temptation to address issues when the whole family was finally together, we learned to save such discussions for another time to ensure that family nights remained something to look forward to.

With six children spanning a wide age range, compromise was key in choosing activities that appealed to everyone. Soliciting input from the kids ensured that each family member felt included, and as they grew older, they took turns planning family nights themselves.

Though there were no strict rules for family night, consistency was paramount. Even when our oldest son was away at college, he anticipated these gatherings, demonstrating the lasting impact of our tradition. While there were seasons when family night faced adjustments, the enduring value of these shared moments became evident as our children grew older, appreciating the time spent together as a family.
